Geschichte:
Auf dem Gipfel der Weltwirtschaftskrise verfügte Präsident Roosevelt, sämtliche 1933-er Gold Eagles nach ihrer Prägung zwecks Aufstockung der nationalen Goldvorräte wieder einzuschmelzen. 10 Exemplare wurden beiseite geschafft und verschwanden zunächst spurlos; 9 spürte man direkt wieder auf. Der letzte verschollene Eagle, der 1954 im Besitz des ägyptischen Königs Faruks auftauchte, erzielte 2002 bei einer Auktion von Sotheby's die Rekordsumme von 7,6 Millionen Dollar.

History:
At the height of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt ordered all 1933 Gold Eagles to be remelted after they were minted for the purpose of replenishing the nation's gold reserves. 10 specimens were set aside and initially disappeared without a trace; 9 were immediately recovered. The last lost Eagle, which turned up in 1954 in the possession of Egypt's King Faruk, fetched a record $7.6 million at a Sotheby's auction in 2002.
