Schedelsche Weltchronik 1493

Die Schedelsche Weltchronik, auch Nürnberger Chronik genannt, ist eine illustrierte Darstellung der Weltgeschichte. Sie ist das Hauptwerk des deutschen Historikers Hartmann Schedel und erschien erstmals 1493 in Nürnberg in einer lateinischen und einer deutschen Fassung. Sie ist die bedeutendste illustrierte Inkunabel. Die das Werk illustrierenden Holzschnitte entwarf Michael Wolgemut. Das Handexemplar von Hartmann Schedel befindet sich in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. Die Chronik folgt der Tradition mittelalterlicher Chroniken, indem sie die Geschichte der Welt in Weltaltern darstellt:

• Erstes Weltalter: von der Erschaffung der Welt bis zur Sintflut

• Zweites Weltalter: bis zur Geburt Abrahams

• Drittes Weltalter: bis zum Reich König Davids

• Viertes Weltalter: bis zum Babylonischen Exil

• Fünftes Weltalter: bis zur Geburt Christi

• Sechstes Weltalter: Geburt Christi bis zu seiner Gegenwart. Dieses Weltalter ist das umfangreichste der Chronik.

• Siebentes Weltalter: Ausblick auf den Weltuntergang und das Jüngste Gericht

Unter den Illustrationen befinden sich 31 doppelseitige Stadtansichten, von denen einige die erste authentische Darstellung des jeweiligen Stadtpanoramas darstellen[2]. Weiter sind in allen Ausgaben zwei doppelseitige Landkarten beigefügt: eine Weltkarte und eine Europakarte. Auf der Weltkarte ist Amerika noch nicht dargestellt, da die Existenz des neuen Kontinents erst bekannt wurde, nachdem Amerigo Vespucci von seiner Südamerika-Expedition 1501/1502 berichtet hatte (siehe Mundus Novus).

Schedel's World Chronicle

The Schedelsche Weltchronik, also known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, is an illustrated account of world history. It is the main work of the German historian Hartmann Schedel and was first published in Nuremberg in 1493 in a Latin and a German version. It is the most important illustrated incunabulum. The woodcuts illustrating the work were designed by Michael Wolgemut. Hartmann Schedel's hand copy is in the Bavarian State Library. The chronicle follows the tradition of medieval chronicles by presenting the history of the world in world ages:

First World Age: from the creation of the world to the Flood.

Second age: up to the birth of Abraham

Third age: until the kingdom of David

Fourth World Age: until the Babylonian Exile

Fifth World Age: until the birth of Christ

Sixth World Age: birth of Christ to His presence. This age is the most extensive in Chronicles.

Seventh World Age: Prospect of the end of the world and the Last Judgement.

Among the illustrations are 31 double-page city views, some of which represent the first authentic representation of the respective city panorama [2]. Furthermore, all editions include two double-page maps: a world map and a map of Europe. The world map does not yet show America, as the existence of the new continent only became known after Amerigo Vespucci had reported on his South America expedition in 1501/1502 (see Mundus Novus).
